The Esperança Namaacha Centre opened in March 2006 on the outskirts of Namaacha, 75 km from Maputo Town and near the border with Eswatini — an area plagued by smuggling, drug use and cross-border child trafficking.
Combined with high HIV/AIDS rates, unemployment, poverty, alcoholism and rising suicide rates, these conditions severely impact local children. Esperança supports orphaned and vulnerable children, including those living with HIV/AIDS or those who have lost parents. Many live with caregivers who cannot fulfill their roles due to illness, age or extreme poverty. Daily activities include meals, tutoring, sports, hygiene routines and life-skills such as gardening, cooking and animal care.
The centre began with 40 children and now accompanies more than 80 children and youth aged 3-21.
